In Serious Need of An Attitude Adjustment

I was speaking to 120 Human Resource people last week in a Southern ON city. The Director of HR for an international company introduced me and in her remarks said this about the task of HR people. " Your job is to mitigate the stupidity of others."

I couldn't believe my ears. I was to present on empowering employees, maximizing staff potential, the art of caring leadership, plus humour and positive attitude to create a culture of employment enjoyment and productivity.

In her one statement she told me she was out of touch and needed a serious attitude adjustment. If human behaviour is nothing more than attitude in action I can't help wondering how this woman relates to the people she leads. By the way she has 8 years before she retires.

My presentation was well received by 119 HR people.I really don't know how the Director felt about it. She probably wasn't even aware of the negativity of her opening remark.

I Hear This All the Time From Young and Old

As a  former teacher I love the English language when it is spoken properly. I hear this far too frequently from young people and now even adults. I hope it never becomes accepted as proper English.

7 Surefire Tips on Using Stories to Parent More Effectively. By Mike Moore

There are three things that all young people strongly dislike...
1. Being preached at
2. Being put down by others, especially parents and teachers.
3. Being yelled at

As parents we know how difficult it can be to refrain from doing all three. When we're angry things just come out and we regret them right after the deed is done. Thank God for the phrase "I'm sorry."

We all seem to have a strong tendency to preach to our kids. And why shouldn't we? We were on the receiving end of preaching for a long time when we were young. Now it's our turn.

The main reason why we should never preach to our children is this: It doesn't work. As much as we want them to listen and follow our words of wisdom and advice, they won't.

Well friends I have found the secret to preaching without them considering it preaching. In fact they will actually enjoy it and it will do a lot to bond you to one another.   "What's the secret?" I hear you asking excitedly! It's quite simple. Storytelling.

Ever since we were children we have had a hunger for stories. " Tell me a story Mommy." "Tell me a story Daddy." were words that came out of our mouths at least once a day.   Our love of stories doesn't stop when we leave childhood. I read recently that adults listen to over 60,000 stories a year. This doesn't seem unreasonable when you consider that every conversation, every newspaper and newscast involves the telling of and listening to stories. Every time we ask someone what they've been up to or how things are going we are requesting a story.

Here are 7 surefire tips on using stories to parent more effectively.
1. Don't begin a story with " Once Upon a time . . . " unless you're dealing with very young children.

2. Become aware of stories with a message while you read , listen and view the media.

3. When you find a story you can use jot the story line down in few words.

4. Practice telling the story in your own words. Feel free to embellish the story to suit your situation.

5. When you tell the story let it speak to the listener.

6. You can ask a question related to the story when you're finished but don't try to condition their response. Just listen.

7. Keep your stories short and crisp. Don't get bogged down in detail.

Start by identifying the values and ideals your family cherishes and affirms and then start looking for stories.

The Beauty of Nature and Stress Relief

If this doesn't reduce your anxiety nothing will.
The Art of Taking One Minute Vacations

I believe that the beauty  surrounding us every day can offer an effective way to manage our ever increasing stress....if we have eyes to see.

Here is a photo taken in Ontario's North near the town of Chapleau. I was just sitting by the shore of Borden Lake in late evening when I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and calmness.

Even now I revisit this scene in my memory to recapture the peace and serenity I felt on that late summer evening.

For Those Who are Stressed Out...Big Time

No doubt about it...we are living in a stressed out world, an age of rage. We need to slow down and cultivate peace of mind. But How???  Here's how I do it. This photo was taken in late afternoon at my cousin's cottage in Northern Ontario Canada.

I was just sitting quietly beside the lake when I was struck by an awesome feeling of peace.  Now even though I am no longer there I can rely on memory to bring back to me the peace of that late summer afternoon. I immediately take a one minute vacation and recapture the Borden Lake moment of stillness and solitude.

Where do you take your one minute vacations?

Why You Should Never Allow Yourself to Be Verbally Abused

I was reading an article awhile ago that really startled me.  I always knew that verbal bullying was harmful to our health and well being but I never knew just how harmful it was.

The article was based on a British study that found that being verbally abused in your workplace by toxic bosses and/or supervisors for a period of ten years, had the same harmful effect on your immune system as smoking three packages of cigarettes a day for the same period of time. WOW!!

It certainly is a given...WE MUST Learn the Art of Verbal Self Defence.

“ 8 Effective Ways To Be Humorous and Entertaining”

“ 8 Effective Ways To Be Humorous and Entertaining”

“Everyone wants to be able to make people laugh and it really isn’t that difficult .” says international speaker/humorist Mike Moore. “ All you need to do is learn a few skills and you’re on your way.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 18, 2010 -
Moore speaks throughout Canada and the USA on Humor and Human Health and Relationships and is a strong believer in the social and health benefits of humor and laughter.

According to Moore, laughter is social glue because it bonds people to one another  and social lubricant because it reduces conflict in human relationships.

“ Moore believes that people who can make others laugh have a lot of friends and a full social calendar. And the best part is that a sense of humor and the ability to make people laugh can be learned..”

Moore, The author of  “ How to Be Humorous and Entertaining in Any Situation,” offers these tips:

1.  Become a humor hound. Start looking for the comedy in the chaos around you.

2.  Carry a notebook and pen with you at all times and record every funny thing you see and hear.

3.  Collect humorous one-liners and inject them into your conversations.

4.  Learn to laugh at yourself and share your foibles with others.  “ If you can laugh at yourself you will be perpetually amused..”  “ If you can’t laugh at yourself you leave the job to someone else.”

5.  Learn to tell a great story. Keep them short and sweet.  Use a sound recorder to polish your storytelling skills.

6.  Start hanging out with humorous, happy people and learn from them.

7.  Watch funny movies and sitcoms, read funny books and collect cartoons.

8.  Saturate your life with positive humor and laughter.

“ They deserve paradise who can make another laugh.” ( proverb)

Moore believes that people become what they think about so to become humorous and entertaining think humorous thoughts and be willing to share them with others at every opportunity.

Toxic Bosses

Characteristics of Toxic Bosses
Toxic Bosses ....

*  come across as charming but are cold, cunning and manipulative.

*  constantly use the terms “ My people”, “My department” instead of “our”

*  take credit rather than give credit for work well done by others.

*  directs the focus of  all conversation to themselves. They are “ME DEEP” in conversation.

*  put others down in an attempt to make themselves look good.

*   bend the truth to make themselves appear competent and in control.

*   value no one’s sense of humor but their own.

*   are competitive and will crush you if you get in their way.

*   regret very little about their actions and attitudes.

*   will hang you out to dry without a second thought.

*   don’t get headaches, they give headaches.

*   have an office support system of people who are afraid of them and      they use this system to enhance and promote their career and self interest.

*   are toxic because it works for them and they get away with it.

*   look upon office conflict as a positive thing they can use to their advantage. ( divide and conquer)

*   are insensitive to the feelings, needs and well being of others.

Not all toxic bosses possess all of these characteristics but even if they posses some of them they can make your life miserable and be hazardous to your health.

A British study showed that working for a toxic supervisior/boss for ten years had the same impact on your health as smoking two packs of cigarettes for the same period of time.  Defend yourself against toxic people

The #1 Quality a Woman Looks For in a Man

The # 1 quality a woman looks for in a man is a sense of humor.  I  have asked women in my audiences if they agreed with this and they unanimously said YES.  The question they say they all ask themselves is " Does he make me laugh?" If their answer is yes then they are more inclined to proceed with the relationship. Interesting!!! Men, want to improve your sense of humor?  Visit Here
